Short Stories

I'm going to be entering a local short story contest this year, and I wanted to read some good examples of the genre to help me get over my 'how the hell can you fit a whole story into 3,000 words?' dilemma. I've been to my local book store (and big box book story), and I can't seem to find any short story magazines.

So, I naturally turn to my F-List - where do you find your favourite short fiction? Do you have any favourite authors?

Beauty Sleep

I guess I really hadn't realized just how little sleep I have had recently.  Chronic Insomnia lets you get used to sleeping for only a couple of hours a night.  In the summer, the extra sunlight helps.  Now that fall is in full swing, not having enough sleep makes life hard to deal with.

Yesterday I had a good long nap (which I sorely needed after two far too early mornings in a row), and then went back to bed early, and slept for about 12 more hours.  Today is sunny, and brisk, and I feel better than I have in weeks.

For a long time, I had such trouble with coming up with ideas for stories, and now, my ideas are kind of spinning out of control.  They are mixing together and changing and growing faster than I can keep up with.  Luckily, though, I have some plotting and character exercises that should help me to solidify things again.

I am beginning to think that while I do want to write a short story this month, I might not worry about the guidelines of the contest and just go ahead and start on putting my own collection together.  I'll worry about contests once I have managed to refine my technique again.

NaNo Planning

I have a couple of ideas for NaNo this year.  I could, if I didn't want to start a new story, finish up Hair of the Dog.  I also thought that I would take a bash at filling out the Leona story.  Not sure where that story could go, but I kind of like that for a NaNo story.  I think the combination of the pressure and the open ended story can make for some wicked creativity spurts.  I could also take a bash at writing my Ghost Hunting story.

What I am still having trouble with is finding an idea for a short story to enter in to the CBC contest.  I would like to try and get a collection of shorts together so that I can start submitting stuff to local magazines.  I am hoping that the fall season gives me some inspiration.  Maybe this weird, drifting feeling will be good for something this year ;)

I get email notifications for this contest every year. I have only entered the once. I think I might give it another shot this year. Short stories are hard for me, but if I don't practise, then I won't get any better.

I have been thinking of what I could write, and I think I have decided. I was in the book store yesterday (picking up a copy of Anne Rice's The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty), and I realized that it has been a long time since I have found a good vampire story.

Now, I define a good vampire story as something that has more to it than just sex and biting. There are other issues that I think could do with exploring.

In thinking about it, I have had flashes of some cool ideas for my own vampire coven (including a vampire who wears only the brightest primary colours). I haven't decided all the details of my vampires yet, but I think that I might write a bit of an introduction to the story, and send it in to the Literary Awards.

I figure that the worst that will happen is that I will lose $20.  I think I can live with that if it in any way helps to advance my writing career.

I am using my attempt to get my novel finished and a portfolio created as an excuse to stalk Penda around teh Intarwebs (shhh! Don't tell!).

As such, I have opened a new account at WritersCafe.com under my soon to be pen name, A C Whittet. Kewl, eh? The purpose of this little story is to serve as a background for when I say that I am cross-posting a question to LJ that was first posted there.

I know that I am not the only writer on my Flist, so I am asking my fellow authors to give me a hand. I want to write short stories again. Unfortunately, I seem to have forgotten how. I need pointers.

What makes a good short story? What makes one bad? I had thought that a glimpse at one particular moment in a character's life is what would do it, but every attempt at that has gotten me another novel length story to write.

Anyone? Help a pink haired Witch out? I'll even take recommendations on authors who write great short stories that I can read.
