Friends Only

I've decided to make this journal 'Friends Only'.  For those of you new to LJ that means that only people on my friends list will be able to read the posts by default.

So, I guess this will be my last open post.

If you read my journal and either don't have an LJ or you want to be added to my friends list, you can post here and let me know where I know you from and I'll add you.

Keep in mind that I'm not online as much as I used to be, so you might be waiting a while for a response.

I do still have an open journal that feeds to my Facebook - It's on Wordpress @ phaetalon.wordpress.com/

Content Strike?

I don't know about this.  I read the interview SUP's director (to be found HERE), and I have to say that he has a point.

If you pay for your account, then you are a customer of LiveJournal.  And I know for a fact that when customers write in to my work threatening me with all kinds of 'boycotts' or 'lawsuits' or 'I'm telling my congressman/the BBB/my mommy on you!' whining crap, I am definitely a lot less interested in going out of my way to help them.

What is that saying?  You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.  Demanding something rather than even trying to work within the system or ask for help is going to make people want to hear you less.

Then there is the fact that a single day boycott won't do anything because there will never be enough people behind it.  Just like all of the calls to not buy gas on a certain day.

That's just not how it works.  A company will bow to pressure only when they have suffered financially.  A single day of not posting won't cost them anything because those of us who have payed accounts have already payed for the year (or month or however you pay).

If you could convince people to stop paying for their accounts for a year, then maybe you would have something that would get their attention.  But I just don't think that this will make any difference.

I probably won't post anything during the Content Strike, but it will be a coincidence.  I just don't always have the time or inclination to post everyday.

All in all, I don't think that this movement was very well thought out.  But, to everyone who wants to be on board, best of luck with it.  Who knows, maybe they will care after all.

Robert Irvine Sacked

For anyone who watches the food network (like me), it would seem that Robert Irvine of 'Dinner Impossible' fame has been canned for exaggerating his resume. Turns out he didn't really help to bake Charles and Di's wedding cake (they are also hinting that he wasn't entirely honest about his training either).

I read in one of my cooking comms here on LJ the reaction, and it seems to be almost entirely composed of "OMGZ How dare he???!!!! WTFBBQ!!11!!" One person went so far as to ask who hasn't "fluffed" their resume once in a while to get a job that they really wanted and was roasted by those who have never EVAR lied once in their whole lives and clearly are all saint material (perhaps the next big religious war will be about who gets to be the Patron Saint of Cooks and Kitchens).

Now, for me, I think that it was pretty stupid to take a risk like that when your new job is going to put you in the public eye (where all specks of dirt are put under an electron microscope). But, really, part of me is wondering, if he was good at his job, then why the hell do you care now?

This situation draws a lot of parallels for me to the Pagan community past and present. People will scream about credentials and toss those who fudge the line on the bonfire ... and yet, many of the people in our history, who have done the exact same things, are forgiven because they did a good job. They proved that the value of such credentials are a relative thing.

Many have shown that you don't always need to be initiated by a witch with a line back to New Forest to find yourself as part of that line ... that it is experience and talent that make a witch more than the names you can drop at parties. These people from our past are still revered as Pagan leader and elders and all their past problems are magically forgiven, or out shadowed by their overall accomplishments.

Someone who shall remain nameless just now, used to compare the craft to cooking quite a lot. And I think it is a good comparison. And it makes me wonder why people are freaking out. He turned out to be a good chef.

I am not really sure where I am going with this, but it definitely gives me some food for thought (and an insight into a would-be article I have lying about).

I Has Renewed!

Went about a month without my paid LJ, and I think that was long enough. I missed my icons. I had actually forgotten about a lot of them. I get 44 this year 2 Thumbs Up (remember these guys?)

Not much else to say. This was mostly to show off new icons and the lack of banner ads Celebrating

The Great Community Purge

In case anyone cares:

I have purged a lot of excess communities from my FList.  I have been meaning to do it for a while.  Some are redundant icon comms, but most notabley, I am done with the snarking comms.

They used to be funny, but now, it's just gotten really old.  I see no reason why people can't vent in their own personal journals, and really, seeking out people online to make fun of or 'stalk and hunt' has never sat well with me.

I have removed [profile] dot_bunnyhunt as well.  I should have done it a long time ago.  I feel a lot lighter severing my connection to that place.

Anyway, I am going to go and make myself something yummy to eat and forget how much online communities other than mine piss me off.

New Journal

Well, being completely unable to access my journal last night kind of freaked me out, so I have finally created my LJ clone journal.  I decided to go with Insane Journal, cause, let's face it, 100 icons for free is way too cool for me to pass up.  Plus, Tweak is the best character ever (for those of you who watch South Park, you know what I mean ;) ).

I think I am going to have to make a special Tweak icon for my clone journal, which I call TweakJournal.  You can find me easily enough at http://phae-talon.insanejournal.com  I am very uninspired when it comes to URLs ;)  Enter phae-talon into something, and if I am there, I will pop up :P

That is about all I wanted to say.  I am having a bit of a no brain day.  I need to type out about 1,000 words worth of story (if I am lucky it is only that many ... I am not sure how many words fit on 8-10 notebook pages).  I need help.  Every time I start to work on this story I add more to it.  I am a little worried that when I am done I will top 100,000 words (and that is before we even start THINKING about part 2 that is already floating around in my mind).

I need to be taught how to write short stories.  I want to build up a profile of something that has been published.  I am not sure that Pagan interest articles count.  Though, I suppose I could spit out a few that were on general interest Paganism and general Pagan life.  That might be considered by one of the local mags.

It is so frustrating to find all of these new publications popping up wanting short stories and essays, and here I am trying not to let my tale turn epic on me.  Ugh!

I probably owe the C&P folks a new story chunk.  Though, I am not really sure that any of you are interested in Ella's story anymore.  Maybe I will make you all wait until NaNo time ;)

Well, I guess I did have more to say than I thought.  Back to work with me.  Have a happy weekend folks!

Mind of the Phae - part Duex

I did it.  I made a blogger journal.  I like it so far.  I have even made a post (but only one, so don't go all expecting anything profound).  I haven't put the profile in or anything yet.  It's kind of cool - and it gives me the option to host my blog somewhere else in the future if I don't want blogger to host it anymore (which is a neat feature).

Anyway - to anyone interested, it is easy to find.  It is basically the exact same address you use to find this journal, except that 'blogspot' goes where 'livejournal' was.

And It's Blogger In the Lead

So far I have looked at Typepad (owned by 6A, so that kind of defeats the purpose), Greatest Journal and Blogger (which I am beginning to believe is the same thing as Blogspot). So far, Blogger is ahead. I like the style, I like the features ... I need to investigate more on if they have a linking page (like a FList), but so far they look pretty good.

I do still have Xanga to look into, and I want to try and dig up a few others.

Also, I LOVE LJArchive! That is a way cool program. I don't know why I didn't use it before. I am thinking I might try that one that converts your journal into a pdf, as well, though. I have started thinking that I might like a hard copy of my journal one day. Ingrained distrust of computers, I guess.

That is about it for now. I am done reporting on the drama at PC. I am trying to disconnect myself into not caring. I think I might make one last thread there to suggest that if they want to salvage the place, then they are going to have to go back to old style forum running. I doubt it will be well received. I guess it depends on how badly they want to hang on to the place.

On days like today, when it is summery and gorgeous, I find it really hard to give a damn.

LJ's Backpeddaling

From [personal profile] curefreak  in a previous entry: "LJ have come out and said it is a mistake here"

This is my response that could not be posted on that entry since idiots who figure that 'FIRST' is something that needs to be posted have filled the comments section already:

It really is going to take more than a half assed apology to regain the trust of your members. Especially when you acknowledge that this type of witch hunt likely WILL happen again. It will take a lot more.

I, for one, will be purging my interests and looking for blog space elsewhere. Also, I am not going to be renewing my paid membership here unless you folks come up with something truly phenomenal to make up for this.  I won't be holding my breath on that note, however.

Not Impressed

I am going to spend the next few days saving my old LJ entries to my computer HD in case something stupid happens. I will probably purge my interests as well.

And after that, I am going to start looking for a new blog. I have heard that Blogger is pretty popular. I have also heard some good things about Wordpress and I think Elf mentioned GreatestJournal, which I will prolly also check out. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Everything just went all to hell all at once, didn't it? I have the Beehive software downloaded and I will be testing it out this weekend. I would have done it last weekend, but I got this damned head cold instead. At least this way we can get Wickets up and running soon. Not a moment too soon, if you ask me.
