Since when is Wicca an umbrella term?? Where the hell are people getting this? And where the hell are people getting that you can be Wiccan without magic? Isn't that a little like someone thinking they are Christian just because they were a gold cross (all that praying and believing and going to church isn't necessary ... it is all about the ACCESSORIES!!) ... maybe I am just getting crankier, but it pisses me off to no end when people figure they can wear religion as a fashion accessory ... and I am not even Wiccan!

*beats head against the desk*

And then they get this condescending tone like anyone who knows more than they do must be all full of themselves and a playgan or wannabe because all truly enlightened souls would never contradict someone ... even when they are spouting nonsense ... because 'everyone is entitled to an opinion'. And then, of course, are the ones who figure that life experience counts as craft experience, and if you are younger than them, you are just a stupid kid, no matter that you have been pagan for nearly three times as long as they have! Aaaargh!

Grrr ...

Yes, they did. Always. It's actually gotten *better* in some places, recently. (Which makes the people who say "you fascist meanie unpagan one-way-only types make me maaadd!" seem more extreme.)

Some of the problem is that the "elders" (for lack of a better term), those who can teach and really communicate, are now pretty firmly aware of & present on the web. There were several years when elder-pagans who were newbies online seemed as clueless as some of the newbies who'd been online for a while. There's less of that now.

It's easier for me to be patient when I realize I'm not trying to reach most of them. Usually, I'm not trying to convince the one I'm talking to... I'm explaining things for the lurkers, who are never going to speak up. Sometimes I'm explaining things with the hopes that other teacher-types can borrow bits of the style or phrasing when they're dealing with similar questions from someone who's actually paying attention to the answers.

And being Discordian helps. I can always fall back on, "Obviously, Eris has blessed you with your very own truths. How lucky that your reality is so completely unique when the rest of us have to settle for shared universes."

Completely off topic
