Here are the pics from our solstice trip to the beach:
Pics from our most recent trip to come - including one of a guy who was dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, but looked like Keith Richards ;)

We went out to do a little picture taking and a little adventuring on our solstice weekend, and we ended up in Whiterock. We wandered down the train tracks to the dock (the one you can see in the bottom photo of my previous post), and we come upon these two women digging industriously in the sand. On closer inspection, we see that they are creating a knotwork/tribal sun.

We watched for a bit - then wandered around for a bit, hoping that they would be able to finish before the tide came in. They made it with about 45 minutes to spare.

I think that it turned out wonderfully, and it was a really special reminder of one of our special days that can all too easily get over looked in the hustle and bustle of life. I really felt very lucky to have wandered upon this in my travels. It is impermanent and was so lovingly crafted simply for the love of doing it and the joy that others would get from it. A gift to the community and to the sea.
We ended up chatting with one of the women. Turns out that she and her mum come out and make sand art all through the spring and summer. The did father's day, and had plans for Canada day as well. Hopefully, we will be able to find our way out there to take a look. I'm really interested in seeing what they come up with for Canada day.
I also have to say that I was mildly thrilled when another woman came up to her and asked her if she was Wiccan and if they celebrated the solstice like this every year (I like it when random people know stuff :) - the answer was 'no', btw - she and her mum just like to make art, which is the perfect reason to do something like this).
