In One Word

Elf's post on NFP has generated a lot of conversation (surprisingly calm and flame free conversation). One member posted about how shortening a description cheapens the described thing. She said that if she could define herself in a couple of sentences that there would be a whole lot left out.

But, I am not so sure that is a bad thing. I think that some things should be left to the imagination. I like words to have connotations, and I like that look people get when you use a word or phrase to describe something that they have to think about to understand.

So, I describe myself in one word:

I am Pink.

The thing to remember is that a short description doesn't restrict or cheapen, but rather is just incomplete. Particularly given people, you could never have enough space to fully describe someone no matter what. So instead, a shorter description can say a lot both in what it comments on, and what it doesn't.

The discussion at circle_cast at Insanejournal is not nearly as calm and flame-free. Apparently, that one was founded by the "we're not WICCAN!!!"

There's something about "no bashing" rules in userinfo pages that just inspires flamewars. Very odd. It's like there's always a hidden corollary: ..."unless we think you're bashing someone else, and then you're a fair target." You know, "all paths deserve respect and tolerance, except for the ones that have rules?"

Yeah, I saw that. It's really kind of frightening. I guess I have been hanging around the 'you aren't Wiccan' crowd so long I forgot how militant the 'we're not WICCAN' crowd can get.
