With an idea ruthlessly stolen from [profile] zahirahblue, I have decided that my lovely new laptop needs a name.  Problem is, I am blank on this one.  No coffee = no ideas.

Does anyone out there have any ideas that they would like to donate to the cause of 'Name Phae's laptop'?

*All* computers deserve a name!

I don't have any grand suggestions right off - I usually like to play with a machine for a bit and get a 'feel' for it before naming it. Here's a few of those I'm currently using:

Isobel - my laptop (dual personal/business - and the one I'm on right now)
Rocky (actually, "Rocky the Horror") - the home server, a frankenbox
Igor - the Kid's WoW machine, another frankenbox
Belldandy - Robin's laptop (another dual-use system, and a Mac)
the Sprite - the older Mac IceBook (formerly the web design machine)
Morgan - my database design workhorse machine
Sarros - my CAD machine at work
Rosa - the secondary programming machine at work
Chronos - the timeclock and telephone system machine
Sophia - the backup and RAID system server

The other machines at work that I deal with (and named) are Torin, Mina, Kiyone, Dylan, Brennus, and Lonon

General guidelines I try to keep in mind are:
- Deity and major mythology figures are generally a Very Bad Idea. (Lots of stories about the network that someone had the bright idea to use Greek and Roman God-names for. Mercury is NOT a good name for a laptop.)
- Machines have personalities, and the name you give them can affect those personalities.
- Fictional characters and "minor" mythology characters often work well, but be sure to take the full character of the character into account.
- After a computer has had a name for any significant period of time (measured in hours or days, not weeks or months), it can be very hard to change the name/personality combination without significant software and/or hardware manipulation (or without significant 'backlash').

More confused now?

Robin and I looked at each other and did mirrored "oh... my...."

Everything is an illusion. Desire is meaningless. Detachment. Not things that it's good to have associated with a computer!

"Where did I put that final draft file..."
::load file::
"I'm sorry, Dave, that file appears to be an illusion. Hey - why are you so upset? You really need to work through your attachment issues..."

You can turn that horrid thing off:
1. Open Control Panel.
2. Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account".
3. Click on the user account you want to change.
4. Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.
5. Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings" link.
6. In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.
7. Reboot
If you need to turn it back on (I've run into a few programs that need to have it on to run a utility or something), just re-select that UAC checkbox and reboot.

Isobel is running Vista. There are some things I really like about it. And other things that make me want to chuck it through the window. TechRepublic has a lot about customizing Vista and getting rid of some of the more annoying bits. (I've got Isobel tweaked all sorts of ways so that it's tolerable for me to be on her hours and hours at a time. I wish they'd just let me develop on a Mac.)
