I think it was probably just to lick the butter from the bowl. I have tried giving them popcorn. I think that they just like the smell of it rather than the food itself (although, sometimes they will lick the popcorn too).
That or it is that nosey cat thing - 'what are you eating?'
I love that picture- so very cat-proper to leave two tidy, perfect prints in the bowl for you.
Now I want popcorn and I cannot have any because of my broken tooth. I'm under orders to not eat any more popcorn unless it is sifted to be certain I cannot bite down on another kernal. I have broken the same tooth off twice now. All that really remains is the filling and root.
I am betting this was the Kitten. If it were Binx, he would have pulled the bowl over and stood on the side to get at whatever it was he wanted out of it.
