That's right. The conservatives, creepy, lying through his teeth Stephen Harper included, have won the election. It is a minority government, so I am not as upset as I would be if he actually had any power to do much of anything at all.
For all those unfamiliar with Canadian politics ... to have a majority government means to have a majority of the seats in the House of Commons (which is roughly 150+) ... without a majority government, the party in charge cannot make huge sweeping changes to laws, budgets, etc because it will inevitably get shot down when Parliment votes on it.
This is a good thing ... it means that no matter how much Harper may want to change our country to a carbon copy of the US ... take away public heath care, remove the right of same sex couples to marry, revisit the issue of a woman's right to choose, etc ... good luck getting it past the House.
Depending on how badly Harper pisses off the Liberals, it can also mean that we could be going back to the polls as early as Labour Day (I am sure that they are just itching to pull the same 'No Confidence' crap on Harper that he pulled on Martin). The NDP has assured people that they wouldn't support that action again ... but seeing how good Mr Layton is a keeping his word this last time around, I am getting ready for another election campaign anyway.
So, in short ... this sucks ... but it could be a lot worse. We will have to just wait and see.
