New Blog New Ideas
So, I did go and get a blogger blog. Several actually. I've been flipflopping on the name. Right now it's at http://cultivateart.blogspot.ca/ - I'm liking it. It's pretty. I've been having trouble with focus lately. It's summer, and this is the season that I am naturally all over the place - taking care of the house, cooking, playing with the baby, cleaning up after the baby, feeding baby, washing baby, etc with baby ;)
I am letting go of the idea of having a regular religious practise. At least for now. I've never been very good at it. I'm good at holidays generally - when there is cooking and decorating and visitors etc. Moving repeatedly and far away has kinda wrecked me for this year. I'm sure by Mabon I will be back in the swing of things. The cooking holidays were always my best :)
For me, blogs need a theme or at least a point of view. My blog at wordpress is about pagan-y stuff. It always has been. I've tried to keep a few others as a 'personal blog', but the best I've been able to do with those are these community-style blogs (LJ & DW). And they are great for that. I can't really keep a public personal blog. I'm not that much of an extrovert.
I've been immersed in a lot of DIY lately - from clothes to decor, art, jewelry, cosmetics, etc etc etc. Since I can do all of these things, I have trouble finding a focus. To help narrow things down, I've decided to focus on necessity first. Losing a lot of weight and then being pregnant has pretty well decimated my wardrobe. I have a single pair of jeans, 3 tshirts, one pair of shoes (and one pair of boots), you get the point. And moving 8 times in the last 10 years has taken care of non-wardrobe items - I've only recently gotten a dining table again after having been without one since New Westminster (I can't remember if that was 6 or 7 years ago).
So my idea is the Handmade Home - basically, a blogging challenge where I will make or upcycle my clothes and furnishings. I haven't decided how many projects I will do yet. These things need to be finite to draw an audience. The recycled clothes blog I'm reading did 100 days of wearing only second hand fashions from ebay and thrift shops (or op-shops, I think she was from Australia). That meant no buying clothes new or wearing clothes that she already had that were bought from a mass-produced source. Though since some of her finds were from shops that got overrun from other shops, I think it was a little easier on her - here it would be like buying from thrift shops and from Winners (Winners sells name brands at lower prices because they only carry over-run).
I'm not judging. It would be a difficult challenge on it's face, and while 3 months of buying nothing 'new' wouldn't really be a challenge for me, I can see how it would be tough for a girl who is a serious clothes horse.
I've got a few things to hammer out still before I start and post about it/advertise it/etc. We'll see how it goes. I really kind of like the idea of a more or less completely handmade wardrobe. And 'Shabby Chic' is my favourite decor look (otherwise known as Cottage Style or DIY). I would probably limit the time to a year. A year of handmade/homemade everything. It would be like being a teenager again - except without the tshirts and jeans ;)
