No, I don't think that the lull of non-controversy is going to last. Why? Well, because I am about to rant about something that will likely make me pretty unpopular ... again.
This recent story caught my attention:
Pledge of the Goddess Community on Racism
http://www.wildhunt.org/2008/03/pledge-of-goddess-community-on-racism.html
"Given the economic injustice in our society, I will promote special stipends for speakers of color and sliding scale or free access to conferences for any participants of color or other participants who may be economically oppressed."
This whole idea offends me. I refuse to be a party to white liberal guilt. I won't accept that the colour of my skin makes me somehow unworthy of any god who might call me because I am not willing to become a Recon. I will not accept responsibility for something that I had no part in.
The sins of the father belong to the father. I have not oppressed anyone, I have stolen no land, and I will not be guilt tripped because people are insistent on living their ancestors' persecution.
I'm not saying that what many cultures went through should be excused or ignored. Racism is a horrid thing born of fear and ignorance. Strength, survival and diversity should be celebrated.
I don't believe that Eclecticism is a sin, and I don't think that it is right for people to push the idea that it should be. It isn't any different than Evangelicals trying to force the idea that you are beholden to their god for a covenant that you didn't make.
We all live on this earth together. One day, we are going to have to learn to live with each other. That won't happen until people can find it in themselves to leave the tally sheets behind.
